Albergo Palazzo Squarcialupi

Palazzo Squarcialupi is the most important architectural example of the Renaissance period in the village of Castellina in Chianti.

Throughout the period dating from the 14th to the first half of the the 15th century, Castellina was the seat of important political and military decisions, making it a strategical place for the defense of the borders of the Florentine Republic against Siena.

The Palace and its riches belonged to the Squarcialupi Family up until the first half of the 15th century.

The only testimony that remains of this family is a coat of arms situated over the ancient stone oven in one of the elegant lounges on the first floor.

Towards the end of 1550, after the definative capitulation of Siena by the Florentines, the property passed under the control of the Strozzi-Ugolini Family, who made a more aristocratic and less military mark, giving a new impulse towards agriculture and in particular, to the cultivation of vines.

The actual achitectural structure and its noble residential and agricultural role, is attribuated to the Ugolini family.

In the last ten years the property has passed on to the Targioni-Bojola family who have preserved the agricultural activity through the winery la “Fattoria la Castellina” and have transformed a part of the Palace into an elegant hotel.
